Role of Soviet Union in the Korean War
The Soviet Union did not participate in the Korean War much with combat but they did help North Korea and China. After all, they did support Kim Il Sungs communist Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea along with China. So although they were not directly involved in the war, they did supply North Korea and China with aid and other supplies like fighters and pilots. Some of the Soviet's citizens volunteered in the North Korean military. As three countries who had strong beliefs in communism, they became allies in the war. The US hated the Soviet Union because they wanted to keep the Policy of Containment. If the US fought directly with the Soviet Union then it would have probably been a disaster. There was the risk of a nuclear war between the two so the USSR ( Union of Soviet Socialist Republicans ) tried their best to keep quiet about supplying the North Koreans and tried to stay away from declaring war. By officially denying participation in the war, the Korean War could not escalate. Apparently, the Soviet Union decided to charge China for all the material and support they received, causing China to feel humiliated. In 1960, China broke away from the Soviet Union which is now known as the Sino-Soviet Split. This split created a rift amongst all communist powers who were expected to pick one side of the divide. It was influenced by the Korean War.
Implications :
Although the Soviet Union never joined the war officially, they played a big part by helping China and North Korea. This helped prolong the war, making the North Korea and its allied forced much harder to defeat. I believe they were clever because if they actually declared war then the tension between them and the US would only get much worse and they couldn't afford the risk of a nuclear war. If the Soviet Union might not have helped North Korea, they might not have had as much of a change against the US.
